11 PLUS MATHS

11 PLUS TIPS for Maths

For 11 plus maths tests, your child will have to master a wide range of maths skills, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Not only the basic fundamentals should be solid, doing mental calculations and solving problems using time, measure or money also form part of 11 plus tests. To be able to solve problems quickly and within the time frame given your child should have a secure grasp of their times tables up to 12 at least.

The 11 plus tests are designed to test the child’s ability in doing mathematical process’ skills, which include reasoning, analysis and evaluation. You can help learning in all these core areas and more with maths worksheets, games and activities.

Encourage your child to participate in real life activities and everyday tasks which improve their problem solving ability e.g.

  • If your child wants a new video game, set them the task of finding the best cost effective game in the market.
  • Encourage your child to look out for percentages: in a newspaper, in shops, or on adverts for credit cards and ask them what these percentages mean.
  • When you’re out shopping or in a restaurant Practise maths with your child . Ask them what they want to eat and how much will the total bill be for themselves as well as the whole family. Ask them to look at any special discount offers and work out how much you can save.
  • In supermarkets ask them to look at the prices shown in pounds and pence and apply offers when in percentages or BOGOF (Buy one get one free)
  • If your child enjoys maths and is willing to do additional work, ask his school teacher if they can offer extra work or include him in a maths club
